Custom PVC Figures: What’s the Difference Between Drip Molding and Injection Molding?
Many buyers are unsure which manufacturing process to choose for their custom figures. Sample photos may look similar, yet the quotations can vary significantly. The reason is simple: drip molding and injection molding use different production methods, resulting in clear differences in tooling investment, coloring techniques, and finished appearance.
The following four comparisons will help you choose the right process for your project.
1. Molding Process
Injection Molding
Injection molding heats PVC or ABS plastic pellets until they become flowable, then injects the material into a custom mold under high pressure. The molded components are then prepared for further processing. Short molding cycles make this process suitable for continuous, high-volume production.
PVC Drip Molding
PVC drip molding dispenses different colors of liquid PVC into designated areas of a mold. Mold closing, heating, cooling, and demolding complete the three-dimensional shape. Color dispensing and heating take time, limiting daily production output.
2. Tooling and Costs
Injection Molding: Higher Tooling Investment
Steel molds are widely used for mass-produced injection-molded figures. Precision tooling can cost tens of thousands of RMB or more. The more components a character requires, the greater the tooling investment and the longer the development time.
These projects commonly start at 2,000–5,000 pieces per design, spreading tooling costs across a larger production run.
PVC Drip Molding: Lower Initial Investment
PVC drip molding can use aluminum, copper, or steel molds. Tooling for small, simple designs can start in the low thousands of RMB, helping keep initial product development costs under control.
Sampling can be completed in 7–15 days. Minimum orders are typically 1,000 pieces per design, with some simple designs available from 500 pieces.
3. Appearance and Details
Injection-Molded Figures: Refined Surfaces and Rich Color Effects
For collectible figures made from separate components, each part is injection molded, trimmed, and sanded before spray painting, pad printing, or hand painting. The finished parts are then assembled.
This production method creates smooth, refined surfaces and allows gradients and detailed facial graphics. It also supports components that require precise assembly or articulated structures.
PVC Drip-Molded Figures: Rounded Shapes and Clearly Defined Colors
PVC drip-molded figures retain a seam where the mold sections meet. Their visual characteristics include rounded shapes and clearly defined color blocks.
Different colors are formed directly within the PVC material, so the molded-in color areas have no surface paint layer to peel off. Defined boundaries keep adjacent colors separate. This is a distinctive feature of drip molding, making it well suited to solid-color designs but less suited to producing broad, smooth gradients directly during molding.

4. Which Process Is Right for Your Project?
Choose Injection Molding for:
Detailed collectible figures: Designs requiring gradients, shading, and rich painted details.
Multi-part or articulated figures: Designs requiring separate components or moving parts.
Larger production runs: Projects with sufficient tooling budgets and plans for repeat orders.
Choose PVC Drip Molding for:
Character keychains and small mascots: Compact designs with clearly separated colors.
Corporate gifts and promotional merchandise: Products that emphasize recognizable character designs while keeping development costs under control.
Initial market testing: New products with smaller first orders and lower tooling budgets.
